Olivia Law is a classically-trained horn player who graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Professional Diploma in Music. In 2007, she earned a Master of Arts in Music Performance at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Switzerland. Her teachers included the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts former Lecturer in Brass and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong current principal horn Joe Kirtley, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra 3rd horn player Homer Lee. In Switzerland she studied horn under the tutelage of Professor David W. Johnson, former member of the renowned horn ensemble the American Horn Quartet. She also studied with Sandro Ceccarelli, principal horn of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano G. Verdi.
Olivia has performed in several master classes, including American Horn Quartet, Frank Lloyd, Timothy Brown and Michael Thompson. In summer 2006, she performed at Ticino Musica in Locarno, Switzerland with the virtuoso oboist Ingo Goritzki. She has also participated in numerous performances with orchestras, including The City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, the Arcadia Orchestra (Switzerland), Orchestra da camera di Lugano (Switzerland) and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra.
Olivia hosted a solo recital 'Play the music, not the instrument' in October 2018. The interpretation of this performance is music has no limitations and no boundaries. Traditional classical instruments find their voice in genres as diverse as jazz, rock and bossa nova. Exploring the possibilities of our instruments, we find a way to connect to the kinds of music we love.
In addition to regular classes, Olivia also organizes student concerts to provide students more performance experience. Besides teaching instrument skills, communicating with students, understanding their learning difficulties, and helping them build self-confidence and passion for music are also her educational goals. She believes that learning a favorite instrument can greatly improve a person's willpower, concentration, and self-confidence, which are very helpful for personal growth.
